He has dedicated his life to nature conservation and the sustainable protection of the planet. He co-founded the Western Cape fire fighters unit and trained the Cape Nature staff in both theoretical and practical fire fighting techniques which he gathered whilst fighting many great fires in Table Mountain area.

In 2006 Braam and partner David Grier ran the Great Wall of China (4218km) in 98 days, raising R500 000 for Operation Smile, a charity that facilitates reconstructive surgery for impoverished children born with facial deformities. In 2008, after serious knee surgery, Braam and David embarked on another campaign, “Smile around South Africa”, and ran around the entire coastline from Namibia to Mozambique (3278km), raising in excess of R2 million for Operation Smile, enough to provide approximately 500 cleft palate operations.

In 2011 Braam and race partner Peter van Kets represented South Africa in an unassisted race against the clock to the South Pole, a distance of 888km, which they covered in 24 days, while haling sleds weighing 85kg each, in high winds and an average temperature of -45° C. The expedition was launched to illustrate the effects of climate-change.

In his Cape to Rio challenge, Braam and Wayne Robertson achieved an epic world first by rowing from Cape Town to Rio in a small vessel named Mhondoro. They arrived at their destination on the 9 May 2017 after spending 92 days at sea.
